Stockholm Syndrome, the epitome of Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, a pea-sized structure at the base of the brain. It's sometimes known as the "cuddle hormone" or the "love hormone," because it is released when people snuggle up or bond socially. So why call it the epitome, for someone to distance themselves from one, which will be reasons like shear violence, abusive nature, or simply involuntary custody. Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response. It occurs when hostages or abused victims bond with their captors or abusers. This psychological connection develops over the course of the days, weeks, months, or even years of captivity or abuse. Combining both, it's safe to say that someone suffering from the later is no longer in control of their will to direct their emotions instead they are forced by their intra-hormonal activities to grow a connection to their “captor” to be concise.
